Topinabee

(top 'n-uh-bee)
Executives of the Michigan Central Railroad founded this Cheboygan County town in 1881 for the expressed purpose of creating a resort community on Mullett Lake during the lumber era. H.H. Pike built a hotel here that year and helped plat the village, naming it after Potawattomi Chief Topinabee or, "Great Bear Heart." He signed a treaty giving white men the site of Fort Dearborn (now Chicago).

Today, Topinabee retains its small town atmosphere with a store, post office, township hall and city park on the lake, serving the surrounding resorts. It is located on Mullett Lake in Mullett Township.
